The origin of the term is rooted in Portuguese. Portuguese sailors brought back carved animal and human figures from their voyages to West Africa. These were said to have a magical effect. “ fetish” from the Portuguese word (magic) .
The term fetish or fetishism has different meanings. This term was used for the first time to describe the worship of inanimate objects in the form of religious fetishism among primitive peoples. It describes the belief that objects can have supernatural powers.
The colloquial meaning refers to when someone, for example, has a shoe habit and describes this as their “fetish” (worshipful object).

However, the word fetish is usually associated with particular sexual behavior . The term describes a form of sexuality that is directed towards specific objects or parts of the body.
These inanimate objects can be shoes, underwear, silk stockings or shackles. But certain materials such as lacquer, leather or latex are also popular fetishes because they feel very good. The sexual fetish can also be directed towards certain parts of the body (e.g. feet, hair, etc.).
In sexual fetishism, the person affected needs their fetish to become sexually aroused.
