Mingle

Online Dating Glossary – Mingle

The still relatively new relationship phenomenon of “MINGLE” is a word creation from the English terms “mixed” and “single” and means something like that you are actually “officially” single, but somehow at the same time you are single relationship is there. Alternatively, the terms “friends with benefits” or “friends with certain advantages” used as synonyms.

The “mingle” existence is characterized by non-commitment and a freedom that doesn’t want to be given up and by not being too close…paired with moments of togetherness that don’t differ much from those of a “normal” couple: you meet, talk to each other, do things together, go out together and have sex.

But... you're not officially in a relationship.

This phenomenon is, so to speak, the relationship-technical implementation of the increasing individualization and self-determination that can be observed above all in large urban centers. Munich is definitely a good example of an increased number of Mingles.

In 2011, the US romantic comedy “Friends with Benefits” (original title: Friends with Benefits) – starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake – made a significant contribution to making this “modern” relationship concept more present in the general public let.

You can easily recognize a “mingle” if you ask him whether he is in a relationship and this question cannot be answered clearly with a “yes” or “no”. This relationship philosophy finds many supporters, particularly among 20 to 40 year olds.

That's not surprising, after all, during this time you often live in a Sturm und Drang phase, you want to get to know and find yourself, try out different things, discover new territory and have as many exciting experiences as possible.

In addition, you are not yet so firmly rooted professionally and increasingly locally, so you are happy to transfer your flexibility into the field of love and partnership.

This new relationship model somehow initially sounds like a lot of fun and independence. However, things can sometimes turn out to be very unpleasant for everyone involved. The uncertainty about whether you are in a relationship or not is not always pleasant.

There are people who find the feeling of togetherness not only beautiful but essential and who suffer when they stare transfixed at their smartphone and wait longingly for a message, which can, however, not arrive for days or even weeks.

It remains to be seen whether “mingle” find its way into social networks like Facebook as the new official relationship status…
